Because of intervening railroad tracks that are heavily used, a safe connection between the extensive Schuylkill River Trail, Schuylkill River Park, and Center City Philadelphia has been a long-desired feature. As a result of a high profile court ordered settlement, the proposed bridge design incorporated a design review team process that brought together the HNTB and M&M design team with various community groups, nearby residents, and private funding representatives. A series of public meetings evolved the choices to the one shown here that draws upon the area’s history as a former industrial railroad yard. The proposed bridge will provide a safe, barrier-free crossing, as well as affording new overlooks to view the City and river from sunrise to sunset.
