Several miles of Delaware River edge highway reverted from high level industrial with semi trailers almost blocking the roadway, and an active rail line throughout, to mixed use residential, office and entertainment. The plantings along the center focused upon flowering trees, long lived hardy perennials and spring flowering bulbs. Street trees along the sides helped to make the formerly bare roadway more pedestrian friendly.
Menke and Menke has provided landscape architectural services to the highways along Philadelphia’s Delaware Riverfront, beginning over 25 years ago with the Riverwalk planning study, and continuing with the I-95 center city section. More recently, the firm has provided the same services to sections of Columbus Boulevard/Delaware Avenue from Reed Street on the southern end to north of Penn Treaty Park. The plantings combine annuals, bulbs, perennials, trees and shrubs in a continuous display of the area’s delightful four seasons climate.
